Why scrolling wins

How to Stop Doomscrolling Reddit Without Leaving It

To stop doomscrolling Reddit, start with Reddit's own setting that turns off home feed recommendations, so Home shows only communities you joined. Then make the scrolling itself cost effort: Fluid Friction adds friction to every swipe in Reddit on Android, and on iPhone it also hides recommendations, mutes keywords and communities, and offers Old Reddit. It is free.

Fluid Friction adds friction to every swipe, so Reddit moves one post per deliberate drag.

Reddit is the doomscroll people defend. It is not short video, it is "reading", the communities are genuinely useful, and the comments are where the good stuff is. Then it is 1am and you have read forty threads about things you do not care about.

The fix is not deleting Reddit. It is taking out the parts that are not yours and making the endless part cost something. Here is how to stop doomscrolling Reddit while keeping the communities you actually joined.

What changes:

  • Stays: your communities, search, comments, messages and posting.
  • Goes: suggested posts and "Because you visited" carousels from communities you never joined.
  • Changes: scrolling, which now takes a small deliberate drag per post.

Step 1: turn off Reddit's home feed recommendations

This is built in, free, and does most of the work.

  1. Open your Reddit settings

In the Reddit app, open your profile and go to Settings. On the website, open Settings and the Feed settings tab.

  2. Turn off home feed recommendations

Switch off the toggle for home feed recommendations. Home then shows posts from communities you joined rather than suggestions.

  3. Leave or mute the communities that pull you in

Most doomscrolling happens in two or three subreddits. Leave the ones you would not miss, and mute the ones you want to keep but not see on Home.

Menus move between Reddit versions, so if the toggle is not where described, search Reddit's settings for "recommendations".

Step 2: make the scrolling cost something

Recommendations are only half of it. Even a feed of your own communities never ends, and the swipe that moves it costs nothing. That is the part friction changes.

  1. Install Fluid Friction

Get it free on Google Play or on the App Store. There is no account.

  2. Turn on friction for Reddit

On Android, friction runs inside Reddit's real app. On iPhone, open Reddit inside Fluid Friction's browser, where it works logged out or signed in.

  3. On iPhone, add the Reddit switches

Block home feed recommendations hides Reddit's recommendation carousels and, on a best effort basis, suggested posts. Mute keywords and communities filters what you never want to see, and Use Old Reddit gives you the plainer layout.

  4. Put a schedule on the late hours

Gentle in the day, intense after 10pm is the setting most people keep. More in why you scroll at night.

The real wave and bubble from the app, running in your browser. One post moves per bubble.

Why Reddit is so easy to keep scrolling

Reddit hides the cost of scrolling better than most apps. Every post is short, every thread feels like it might be the useful one, and there is no video to make you notice how long you have been there. You never decide to keep going, you just never decide to stop, which is the pattern in how to stop doomscrolling.

Friction puts the decision back. Each swipe takes a small drag through the fluid, and past a threshold a bubble rises off the screen before the next post appears. Reading a thread you chose is barely affected. Flicking through forty you did not choose becomes noticeably tiring, and most people stop. The mechanics are in how scroll friction works.

How to stop doomscrolling Reddit at night

Most Reddit doomscrolling happens in bed, where a thread feels lighter than video and there is no natural end to the evening. Three changes target that window specifically:

  • A friction schedule. Fluid Friction can stay gentle during the day and turn intense after 10pm, so late night scrolling takes real effort while daytime reading is barely affected.
  • Mute the late night communities. The subreddits you scroll at 1am are usually not the ones you would choose at noon. Mute them on Home and visit them on purpose.
  • Old Reddit on iPhone. The plainer layout has fewer images and no autoplaying video, which makes long scrolling sessions noticeably less sticky.

If you wake up and reach for Reddit at 3am, the same schedule covers it. The wider pattern is in why you scroll at night.

If it stops working

If recommendations come back, Reddit may have reset the setting after an update, so check the home feed recommendations toggle again. If scrolling feels free again on Android, check that friction is still on for Reddit after any phone update, since some phones pause apps in the background to save battery. On iPhone, make sure you open Reddit through Fluid Friction rather than the Reddit app.

Common questions

How do I turn off recommendations on Reddit?

In the Reddit app, go to Settings and switch off home feed recommendations. On the website, it is under Settings, Feed settings. Home then shows posts from communities you joined instead of suggestions.

Is there an app to stop doomscrolling Reddit?

Yes. Fluid Friction adds friction to every swipe in Reddit, so the feed only moves with a deliberate drag. It is free on Android and iPhone, with no account, and on iPhone it can also hide Reddit's recommendations and mute keywords.

Does this work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. On Android, friction runs inside Reddit's real app. On iPhone, Reddit opens inside Fluid Friction's browser, where friction, hidden recommendations, muted keywords and Old Reddit are available. Both are free.

Will I still see my communities and messages?

Yes. Turning off recommendations and adding friction leave your communities, comments, messages and posting untouched. Only suggested content goes, and scrolling takes a little more effort.

Is it safe to use Reddit inside another app?

Reddit works logged out in Fluid Friction's browser. If you sign in, you do it on Reddit's own page, so Fluid Friction never sees your password, and the session stays on your device.
