Block the feed, keep the app
How to Get Rid of the For You Tab on X (Twitter)
X has no setting to remove the For You tab, and the app keeps opening on it even after you switch to Following. To get rid of For You on X on iPhone, open X in Fluid Friction's browser and turn on Block For You feed, which defaults to Following and hides the algorithmic timeline. Trending and Grok can be hidden too. It is free.
On this page (7 sections)

You switch X to the Following tab, read what the people you chose have posted, and close the app. Next time you open it, you are back on For You, with posts from accounts you have never followed, picked to keep you there.
That reset is deliberate, and X does not give you a way to stop it. Here is how to get rid of For You on X as far as the app allows, and the free way to make Following stick.
What you can expect:
- Built in: a Following tab that you have to choose again every time.
- Fluid Friction on iPhone: Following by default, no For You, and optional switches for trending, Grok, communities and DMs only.
- On Android: friction on X's timeline, so scrolling it takes deliberate effort.
What X lets you do yourself
- Tap Following. At the top of the home timeline, Following shows accounts you follow, newest first. X reopens on For You.
- Pin a list. A list of accounts you choose can be pinned beside the home tabs. It is a good way to read a small group, but For You is still the landing view.
- Not interested. The three dots on a post let you say you are not interested, which tunes For You without removing it.
Desktop browser extensions can hide the tab on a computer, but they do not help on your phone, which is where most scrolling happens.
Get rid of For You on X on iPhone
Apple does not let one app change another, so the way to change what X shows on iPhone is to open X's website inside an app that can restyle it.
Install Fluid Friction from the App Store
Get it on the App Store. There is no Fluid Friction account, and the blocking tools are free.
Open X inside Fluid Friction and sign in
X's own login page loads in the in-app browser. Your session stays on your device.
Turn on Block For You feed
X opens on Following and the algorithmic For You timeline is hidden.
Hide the rest of the pull if you want
Block Trending turns Explore into search only and hides trending modules in the timeline. Block Grok and Block Communities remove those surfaces, and DMs Only restricts X to Direct Messages.
On Android: friction on the timeline
On Android, Fluid Friction works inside X's real app. It cannot hide the For You tab there, but it puts friction on scrolling: each swipe drags through on screen fluid, and a bubble has to rise off the screen before the timeline moves. It is free on Google Play.
For You is built to remove the decision to keep scrolling. Friction puts that decision back in every swipe, which is why it tends to outlast a hard block; more in why app blockers don't work. The same approach works on Reddit, covered in how to stop doomscrolling Reddit.
Why For You is so hard to put down
Following is a list of people you chose, and it ends: once you have caught up, there is nothing new. For You never ends, because it is not limited to people you follow. It mixes posts from anyone, picked by how likely they are to keep you reading, and it puts the most provocative ones near the top. That is why ten minutes on Following feels like checking in, while ten minutes on For You feels like losing an evening.
Hiding For You gives you back the ending. When you have read what the people you follow posted, X runs out, and closing it becomes the obvious next step instead of a decision you have to make against the app. Friction does the same for the timeline that remains, by making each swipe a small choice. The mechanics are in how scroll friction works.
If it stops working
If For You reappears, check that you opened X through Fluid Friction and not the X app, which still opens on For You. If X has changed its layout, the switch may need an app update to catch up, so keep Fluid Friction updated. And if you are signed out, X shows a limited logged out view, so sign in on X's own page inside the browser.
Which method fits you

| Less X on Android | Friction on the timeline |
Common questions
Can you remove the For You tab on X?
Not in X's own app. You can switch to Following, but X opens on For You again next time. On iPhone, Fluid Friction's Block For You feed hides the For You timeline and defaults to Following whenever you open X through it.
Why does X keep switching back to For You?
X treats For You as the default home timeline and returns to it when you reopen the app. There is no setting to change the default, only the option to tap Following each time.
Does this work on iPhone and Android?
Hiding For You works on iPhone, in Fluid Friction's browser. On Android, Fluid Friction adds friction to scrolling inside X's real app but cannot hide the tab. Both are free.
Is it safe to use X inside another app?
You sign in on X's own page, so Fluid Friction never sees your password, and your session stays on your device. It does not read your posts or messages.
How do I get rid of suggested posts on X?
Mark them Not interested from the three dots menu to see fewer, or read the Following tab, which has none. On iPhone, Fluid Friction's Block For You feed defaults to Following, and Block Trending hides trending modules in the timeline.
Can I use X only for messages?
On iPhone, yes. Open X in Fluid Friction and turn on DMs Only, which restricts X to Direct Messages and hides the timelines.
